Summary: | Pope Francis's encyclical Laudato Si placed the ecological concerns and environmental responsibility into the heart of Catholic social teaching in an epoch-making manner. His account of creation, his call for an integral ecology, which includes the preferential option for the poor, and his call for an ecological conversion beckon for a theology to guide and support the implementation of these teachings. Although not mentioned in the encyclical, Hildegard of Bingen's notion of viriditas (the greening) can provide the basis for a theology that meets the exigencies highlighted in the encyclical. |
