Description
Summary:While Calvin was neither a democrat nor a liberal, Calvin's political theology remains useful to Christians who endorse certain forms of liberal democracy. His principled (if qualified) support for religious liberty, his respect for the limits of law given human nature, and his support for the limited autonomy of civil life emerged from a theological outlook rooted in the distinction between the two kingdoms that remains relevant for Christians in contemporary pluralistic societies. It provides the contours of a theological foundation for a principled Christian support for religious, moral, and social pluralism that is consistent with a faithful Christian witness to the lordship of Christ over all of life.
