Summary: | In 1929, Leonce Reypens published an extensive article in Ons Geestelijk Erf about an important but little-known mystical writer, Jan Pullen (c. 1520-1608) - who liked to call himself 'Pilgrim' (Pelgrum). Of the 73 works attributed to him, 43 are indeed authored by him, but only 23 have been found, and only four have been published since 1929. Reypens edited two of his treatises, namely 'About a new creature' (Van een nieuwe creature) and the report of the conversation which Pullen had with the beguine Claesinne van Nieuwlant in Ghent. Pullen's treatise on the imitation of Christ (Die navolghinge Christi) was published by Antonin Van Elslander. A transcription was made of his 'Life of Mary, the most holy Mother of Jesus' (Leven van die alderheylichste moeder Jesu Maria) in 1977. The library of the Ruusbroec Institute possesses a manuscript (Antwerp, Ruusbroec Institute, ms. Neerl. 27) with a number of works by Pullen. In this contribution, we present two treatises from that manuscript, which have not yet been published, namely 'The road towards divine knowledge' (Den toepadt om tot die goddelijcke kennisse te komen) and 'About the supra-essential life' (Van het overweselijck leven). |
