Description
Summary:This article focuses on Trinidad and Tobago's (Trinbago's) Black Power movement and the revolt of 1970. A Black theological reading of the reasons for the existence of the movement is offered through the lens of my own experience. The violence of the revolt raises questions about the importance of justice and liberty, i.e. emancipation towards human dignity, and whether or not violence is necessary in the quest for liberation. The various questions addressed in this work include: is the fight for justice and liberty a God-given right? Can Black identity be God's mechanism for redeeming White identity? Is the Bible able to offer the marginalized an opportunity to reclaim their emancipation and so reframe their identities? The article also deals with the question of where is God located in the tensions of living in a Black majority context where “Black” as a description of identity is not widely embraced.
