| Summary: | Beleaguered and overworked French missionary priest Father Gabriel Richard and a 16-year-old boy published the first American Catholic newspaper. Rather than doing so in a large Eastern city, they brought forth their newspaper, 'The Michigan Essay', in a small town on the early American frontier. Besides being the first Catholic newspaper in the nation, it was also the first newspaper of any kind ever published in Michigan. This article focuses on the motives of the priest and the teenaged ally for undertaking this risky and expensive venture, and how it resulted from Father Richard's zeal for proselytizing, teaching moral virtue as one of his role models Benjamin Franklin had done, and educating native American Indian children in his care. |
