Summary: | Psalm 22, as quoted in both Mark’s and Matthew’s passion narratives – because of their focus on the God-forsakenness of Jesus – has fascinated many theologians over the centuries. In this paper, some notable recent accounts are surveyed. The authors included are Friedrich Daniel Ernst Schleiermacher (1768-1834), Hans Urs von Balthasar (1905-1988), Jürgen Moltmann (*1926), and a couple of Lutheran dogmatic theologians. In so doing, an overview of the 19th and 20th century history of interpretation will be provided. |
