| 总结: | Is Augustine’s doctrine of original sin to be considered as typical African? This question plays an important role in recent debates in Augustinian scholarship. In order to answer this question, one has to carefully study the writings of African authors prior, contemporary, and subsequent to Augustine, and compare them with their peers outside of Africa. The current article intends to contribute to this discussion by evaluating the possible presence of an Augustinian notion of original sin in Evodius of Uzalis’ De fide contra Manichaeos. In a first movement, we will discuss the anthropology of De fide contra Manichaeos. Next, we will consider how God’s eschatological role as a judge is portrayed. Thirdly, bringing the two previous lines together, we analyze how the human condition is perceived: to what extent is man capable of good deeds, and what is the role of divine grace in this process? Bringing these three approaches together, we propose to establish whether De fide contra Manichaeos is, or is not, in favour of an Augustinian understanding of (original) sin. |
