Description
Summary:This paper explores aspects of grief in men, integrating insights from recent scholarship on the grief of men and bereavement studies with male subjects. The paper draws on the phenomenological theory of Max van Manen, in particular van Manen's theory of 'phenomenological writing'. This theory is used to explore three important autobiographical accounts of grief: C. S. Lewis's volume A Grief Observed (1963), a memoir Lewis wrote at the time of the death of his wife; Nicholas Wolterstorff's important and still widely read volume Lament for a Son (1987) describing his personal wounding at the death of his son in a mountain-climbing accident; and Henri Nouwen's writings on the death of his mother (the first, In Memoriam (1980), is a journal of Nouwen's experiences of her death, and the second, A Letter of Consolation (1982), is a letter to his father). This paper depicts aspects of men's grief in conversation with contemporary scholarship in men's grief studies and theoretical scholarship on grief. The paper offers further insight into the complex reality of men's grief and explores some of the fundamental experiences of men who are mourning the loss of a loved one. The article concludes with a description of potential mourning strategies for men who are grieving and offers a perspective on the eventual transformation of grief into solace.
