Description
Summary:Freemasonry rouses an increasing interest among Latin-American sociologists and historians of the religions, international relationships and sciences, for example. During the last years, they regularly stressed its importance in the processes of cultural and religious modernization, particularly during the 19th century. Nevertheless, this question remains very badly known. Her current importance is not doubtful, like shows us the persistent ideological conflict with the Catholic Church, for example. To provide tools for comprehension and critical thought, this text proposes to return to the sources, very little known in Latin America. Invented among the British Isles, Holland and France in early 18th century, the freemasonry was the first expression of an international civil society. This paper is based on original sources and on the best academic historiography produced in France, England and Scotland since the 1970’s. It first parses the invention of freemasonry in its political, cultural and religious context, and then analyzes a question: Which was its relation with the Enlightenment century, age of a cultural revolution, between religion, science and reason?
