Summary: | The Abhisamācārikā Dharmāḥ are part of the monastic code of the Mahāsāṃghika-Lokottaravāda. The text is handed down in a single, very corrupt Sanskrit manuscript. Though it was edited already in 1969, the previously misunderstood structure of the text as a whole and the large number of unknown words, many of them terms for realia, made a new and more reliable examination necessary. This was published in 2012 by Seishi Karashima, in collaboration with Oskar von Hinüber. Several of the terms used in the text belong to the broader Indian stock of realia, and contribute to our understanding of Indian cultural history. The present contribution, in addition to evaluating the work as a whole, highlights terms connected with food, places for its preparation and consumption, and vessels. |
