Summary: | Whereas the Algerian Ulama are usually perceived as an elite, giving value only to fuṣḥā Arabic and despising the local dialects, an article promoting the vernacular Arabic language (ʿāmmiyya) and enhancing its use was published in one of their newspapers in February 1936. This original argumentation leads us to question their link to the Arabic language, conceived as a comprehensive entity composed by a founding language and its various branches. In colonial context, the priority was in fact to preserve this language from foreign influences to struggle against acculturation. |
