| Summary: | The twenty-first century has become a difficult place in which young people can clarify a sense of purpose. Jeffrey Arnett, proposes normalizing “emerging adulthood” in which young people forestall commitments, while William Damon argues that a “failure to launch” risks arresting young people in a permanent state of directionless drift. While Damon and others identify important practices to support purposefulness, lacking in these practices is an adequate theological narrative by which to make sense of epiphanies of purpose. Drawing from the work of Jürgen Moltmann, this article articulates a robust theology of Holy Spirit as the narrative ground by which the emergent purposes of young people may be ennobled. |
