Summary: | This article examines the global ramifications of the “decline” of American liberal Protestant theology. Focusing on the case of liberal Protestantism in China, it tells the story of the Chinese theologian Xie Fuya, who was a staunch defender of American liberal Protestantism in the 1920s and 1930s. By the 1970s, he had become a critic of liberal Protestantism. Instead, he called for the creation of a solely Chinese Christianity, independent of any influence from the West. The article uses Xie's life to demonstrate American liberal theology's global reach, as well as its eventual rejection. It also draws upon Xie's career to reflect on the religious revival that has emerged in China today. |
