| Summary: | In my paper I follow the thesis that cities are ambivalent and constantly produce ambivalences. Whoever reflects on the church in a changing world of the 21st century must also think about these urban ambivalences because the progressive global urbanization with its economic, ecological, political, social and religious consequences is one of the greatest transformation processes of the incipient century and has substantial ramifications for the religions and churches. The first two sections will describe the two main ambivalences of the city in more detail; namely, those of a social and religious nature. The decisive concerns of the Christian religion are concentrated at the interfaces of religious and social ambivalences. The discussion will examine both aspects from a perspective of Practical Theology. The third section will describe how these two ambivalences also have an emphasized significance in the Biblical description of the city. With this background, the last section will deliberate the possible consequences, opportunities and challenges for the Protestant churches in the age of the urbanization. In the analysis, references will be made to the contribution of churches, the more recent urban and religious sociology and Practical Theology. For an analytically sharper look at the present, a relationship will be created between exemplary phenomena and discourses on the urbanization of the Victorian Europe of the 19th and early 20th century with current developments. At the same time, the paper will connect the specific perspectives of the German-language Practical Theology and the Protestant Church in Germany with the international discourses about the relationship of religion and city in this way.1This is the Award-Winning-Paper for the 1.-East-West-Theological-Prize 2015, 4th Conference of East-West-Theological Forum: “Crisis and Hope. Wer über die Kirche in einer sich ändernden Welt des 21. Jahrhunderts nachdenkt, muss über diese Ambivalenzen nachdenken, denn die fortschreitende globale Urbanisierung mit ihren ökonomischen, ökologischen, politischen, sozialen und religiösen Folgen ist einer der größten Transformationsprozesse des anhebenden Jahrhunderts und hat erhebliche Folgen für die Religionen und Kirchen. In den ersten beiden Abschnitten werden die soziale und die religiöse Ambivalenzen als die zentralen Ambivalenzen der Stadt ausführlicher dargestellt. An den Schnittstellen von religiösen und sozialen Ambivalenzen bündeln sich entscheidende Anliegen der christlichen Religion. Beide Aspekte werden aus der Perspektive der Praktischen Theologie diskutiert. Im dritten Abschnitt wird argumentiert, dass auch in der biblischen Beschreibung der Stadt diese beiden Ambivalenzen eine hervorgehobene Bedeutung haben. Vor diesem Hintergrund werden im letzten Teil mögliche Konsequenzen, Chancen und Herausforderungen für die protestantischen Kirchen im Zeitalter der Urbanisierung diskutiert. Bei der Analyse werden kirchliche Verlautbarungen sowie Beiträge der neueren Stadt- und Religionssoziologie und der Praktischen Theologie berücksichtigt. Um den Blick auf die Gegenwart analytisch zu schärfen, werden exemplarische Phänomene und Diskurse der Urbanisierung im viktorianischen Europa des 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhunderts mit gegenwärtigen Entwicklungen in Beziehung gesetzt. Zudem sollen auf diesem Weg die spezifische Perspektiven der deutschsprachigen Praktischen Theologie und der hiesigen evangelischen Kirche mit dem internationalen Diskurs über das Verhältnis von Stadt und Religion verknüpft werden. |
