| Summary: | In this paper I recall one aspect not yet studied of the priest born in Xativa (Valencia) Joaquin Lorenzo Villanueva, an enlightened priest, later turned into a liberal one, namely that of translator of biblical texts, specifically in the context of the liturgy of Holy Week. After a schematic introduction to the biblical Spanish atmosphere at the end of the eighteenth century and some biographical data of Villanueva, I will focuse our attention on their translator facet of biblical texts, by reviewing their publication of an Oficio de Semana Santa in 1784, just immediately after the decree of the Court of the Holy Office in 1782, which allowed vernacular versions of the Bible in Spain.
