The article analyzes juridical tests, mostly laws from the third to fifthcenturies CE. Which types of religious deviance are criminalized? Evidently, thereare areas of private or even individual religious practices that are seen to be hardlyopen to sanctions or to the formulation of public norms altogether. Religiousknowledge – its achievement or its lack – is accorded a central role in these contexts.
