Description
Summary:Time and again one finds, even in scholarship, an equation of »martyrdom« and »self sacrifice« or one reads of »martyrs« who »sacrificed« themselves. This paper looks in contrast at the time of the emergence of the martyr terminology and points out, how differentiated these two fields of notions have to be conceived of in grecoroman comprehension. It determines the contexts in which early Christian texts from the second century describe the execution of Jesus believers as »martyrdom« and »sacrifice«, and which contemporary discourses are affirmed or denied by this. It gets clear, how the Christian redefining broadened the ancient understanding of »sacrifice« and made it applicable in new contexts.
