Description
Summary:Examples of pilgrimages from Northeast Africa and Asia are discussed in a comparative perspective against a background of a pilgrimage literature which focuses on Christianity in Europe and the Americas. The paper concentrates on »visits« to Muslim saints in Khorezm, Uzbekistan (Kehl-Bodrogi) and on a pilgrimage on Taiwan to shrines of the goddess Mazu (ethnographer: Mei Huan Lu). Communal experiences and collective emotions are discussed along the lines of the ›communitas‹ approach to pilgrimages. The focus, however, is on the different ways in which any pilgrimage is perceived by different groups of participants and by other stakeholders like organizers and authorities. To this extent the paper inserts itself into a tradition of writing about pilgrimages as arenas.
