| Summary: | On grounds of the current global developments the anti-occidentalism phenomenon has acquired a specific place in the field of vision of a broad (medial) public. This article argues that the anti-occidentalism represents an old phenomenon which acts as the counterpart of a universalized western value reference system and is present since the decolonization phase in the mid-20th century at the latest. On the basis of the universalism-cultural relativism debate, which is to be mentioned first, this article examines the cultural and historical experiences and developments that determine the conflict between the European »West« and the tradition of the Eastern Church, in particular within the Greek society. Finally, on the basis of the concrete example of the so-called »neo-ortodox« mental tendency, it is aimed to expose the anti-occidental attitudes in the Greek society of today and to point out their relevance with regard to the determination of the cultural self-under standing. |
