Description
Summary:One of the first disciples of Mani, Mär Ammö, was the most important missionary of Manichaeism in Eastern Iran, namely in Parthia and Margiana. There he met Zoroastrians and Buddhists alike to preach the new religion to them. As a consequence of these contacts between early Manichaeism and Buddhism, also Manichaean missionaries of the next generations in Eastern Iran used Buddhists ideas, not only to make their own teaching more applicable to the Buddhist context, but also to reduce the links to the political Sasanian empire. The Buddhist »garb« of Manichaeism in Eastern Iran thus also contributed to universalising Manichaeism thus marking a difference to the Sasanian-based Zoroastrian missionaries in Eastern Iran.
