Summary: | Between 1933 and 1939 Roger Callois participated in Georges Dumézil's lectures given at the fifth section for comparative religion at the École pratiques des hautes études. In the introductions to his Flamen-Brahman (1935), Mythes et Dieux Germains (1939) and Mitra-Varuna (1940) Dumézil expressed his gratitude to his student which indicates that Dumézil very much had benefited from Callois' cooperation. My paper will focus on Gallois' reception of Dumézil's first book Le Festin d'immortalité (1924). The myths of Pandora and Anna Perenna became a major stimulation for Callois inducing him to continue his own studies on praying mantis La mante religieuse (1934-1938) within a modern theory of myth. |
