Summary:Obituary notices have manifold religious, communication and social functions. The scientific study of religion and the social history have widely neglected these sources which obtain information about the attitudes people hold with regard to death and dying. The paper presents data of a research using obituary notices in Tuebingen between 1872 and 1993. Qualitative and quantitative content analysis is used for the analysis of the data.
