Summary: | The religious history of the week demonstrates that temporal rhythms of religions are not eternal characteristics due to the Wesen of these religions. Instead, such rhythms are the outcome of historical processes shaped by competing religious and social rhythms. This article deals with the origin of the week of 8 resp. 7 days in the Roman and Jewish calendar, the ensuing formation of the Christian week and its criticism by French and Russian revolutionary calendars. Finally rhythm that are more complex than the week are analysed in the history of Christianity up to tendencies in contemporary Germany. |
