Summary: | The phenomenon of seeking and providing advice is encountered in all religions. This article centers on religious advice in Islam. Islamic religion and culture have established and developed the well-known institution of the fatwā which is issued by a muftī. Most Islamicists maintain that this institution is a purely legal one which originated at a relatively late date. In this article, however, it is argued that iftā' is a primarily a religious institution that has played an important role since Islam's inception. The origins of this institution can be traced back to the days of the prophet Muhammad. There are many fatwās in the Koran and the ḥadīṭh which illustrate how the Prophet acted as adviser to his followers. It can be shown that a continuity of religious advice existed throughout the first Islamic century. As early as the beginning of the second century religious scholars fulfilled the institutionalised task of providing advice. Furthermore, providing advice was of great importance in the rise and elaboration of Islamic law. The article ends with a bird's eye view of the advice literature in Islam. |
