The way the changes took place and the role played by Reformed Orthodoxy and Pietism, as well as by the Enlightenment, are discussed.Eine gedankliche Reise in das Jahr 1720 zeigt, dass liturgisch und kirchenmusikalisch noch große Übereinstimmungen zwischen den Konfessionen bestehen. Als wirklichen Unterschied hätte man vermutlich nur die in den lutherischen Gottesdiensten oft ausgedehnte Predigt wahrgenommen. Spätestens seit den 1780er Jahren geriet die protestantische Kirchenmusik in eine fundamentale Krise.
