Summary: | An imaginary trip to the year 1720 would show that the liturgy and church music of the denominations was still largely congruent. Probably the only real difference would be the often-lengthy sermon in the Lutheran service. By the 1780s at the latest, however, there was a fundamental crisis in Protestant church music. The way the changes took place and the role played by Reformed Orthodoxy and Pietism, as well as by the Enlightenment, are discussed. (AN: 2014-77524) (RILM) |
