Summary: | The star in the East : Matthew 2:1-2 -- Ecbatana Hamadan -- Comet Halley : determining the speed of the comet -- Halley setting animation -- Magi reach Bethlehem The text at Matthew 2:1 -- EIDOMEN GAR AUTOU TON ASTERA EN TJI ANATOLJI -- translates best as "in the east" and not "at its rising" provided the reference is to Comet Halley, "the east" then meaning simply "when we were in Ecbatana." But if there was indeed a supernova, as Isaiah 60:1-3 may be telling us, then the supernova could be the star of which they were speaking, and they would in fact have seen the supernova "at its rising." The settings of sun, comet, and moon, however, were what directed the magi to Jerusalem. Around the 16th century astronomers began to believe that this "star in the east" was likely the apparition of Comet Halley of 12 BCE. And that view has been widely accepted ever since. In 2006 the Lay Readers Bible Society examined a number of locations where the magi may possibly have lived. And the Society employed archeoastronomy software to determine what the magi would have seen in the sky on the last day Halley was visible. One of the locations under consideration jumped out as unquestionably the domicile of the magi: Ecbatana. The magi (and the Israelites living at Ecbatana who may have alerted the magi) would indeed have seen the comet, but along with the comet they beheld half a dozen other astral phenomena. The comet on its own would not have been particularly a sign. - Publisher |
