Description
Summary:This article attends to unresolved issues in Anglican–Methodist dialogue concerning apostolicity and its connection with the role of the historic episcopate and asks whether there has been progress since Baptism, Eucharist and Ministry [BEM] (1982) in more clearly explaining the relationship between the apostolicity of the whole church and of the historic episcopate. Having explored the theological relationship between apostolicity and the ‘historic episcopate’ – with particular reference to Anglican–Methodist dialogue at an international level, and dialogues in England, Ireland, and the USA – it is clear that despite important progress in other areas of Anglican–Methodist relationships, no agreement has been secured concerning the theological relationship between the apostolicity of the whole church and the historic episcopate.
