Resumo:The 1992 military coup in Algeria overthrew the Benjadid government and stopped the first multi-party elections which if concluded would have brought the FIS (Front Islamique du Salut) into power. In examining the role of the FIS and the military in Algeria the article shows that the FIS responded to cultural demands for integrity, authenticity and identity in a time of socioeconomic and sociopolitical changes whereas the military acted in behalf of Algeria's old authoritarian system.
