| Σύνοψη: | The author discusses the relationship between Islam and modernization. He finds that Islam has not receded into the background; on the contrary, with the acceleration of modernization it has begun to play a new role. Faced with the inevitability of change, traditionalists feel obliged to grant concessions to modernizers. Conversely, confronted with lingering traditional institutions, symbols and norms, the modernizers need to justify change by resort to traditional premises. Thus, the relationship between Islam and modernization in the Middle East is not uni- but curvilinear. (DÜI-Asd) |
