Summary: | The article outlines the European framework of the Napoleonic Wars, the European states' differing dependency on Napoleon, and the distinctiveness of the way in which he waged war, in order locate the ensuing articles about the Moravian congregations in Neuwied, Ebersdorf, Kleinwelka and Christiansfeld in a wider European context. An overview of the battles follows, beginning with Napoleon's 1812 Russian Campaign and the situation of the Moravian congregation in Moscow. Later developments are described from the perspective and experience of the congregation in Herrnhut, on the basis of contemporary reports. In doing so, the author takes account of the results of recent research on the Napoleonic Wars and refers to them briefly. The chronological overview ends with a lengthy quotation from the Unity's leadership about the Gnadenberg congregation, which was the most seriously affected by the war. The article concludes with a discussion of what impact that German Campaign had on the Moravian Church and how its self-understanding changed in respect of both conscientious objection to military service and national commitment and sentiment. |
