Le plaidoyer des Picards, publié en 1909 par R. Poupardin, mais négligé par les historiens de Siger, amène à rectifier le jugement porté par ces historiens sur le rôle de Siger dans la crise universitaire et sur son caractère: Siger ne fut ni un chef ni un violent, mais un comparse et un timide. L'étude des Questiones in III De anima entraîne une révision du même ordre : en 1265, Siger n'est pas un penseur personnel, il est encore un élève; il doit l'essentiel de son information et de sa pensée aux œuvres des théologiens, notamment au Commentaire sur les Sentences de S. Thomas; c'est des théologiens qu'il tient jusqu'à sa manière de lire Averroes, et son originalité ne dépasse pas le jeu logique qui consiste à prendre la défense de la thèse « impossible ». Une seconde partie s'attachera aux années 1272-1275, au conflit doctrinal à l'Université de Paris et au rôle qu'y joua Siger. Siger's name appears for the first time in documents relating to the 1265-1266 university conflict and it is around that time that Siger was teaching his Questiones in III De anima. The Picards' argument, published in 1909 by R. Poupardin, but neglected by Siger's historians, contributes to amending these historians' judgement on Siger's part in the university crisis and on his dispositions: Siger was neither a leader nor a violent man, but a secondary character and a shy individual. The study of the Questiones in HI De anima entails a similar revision; in 1265 Siger is not an original thinker, he is still a pupil; he owes most of his information and thought to the works of theologians especially to the Commentary of St Thomas' Sentences; he owes the theologians even his way of reading Averroes and his originality is no greater than the logical exercise which consists in defending the "impossible" thesis. A second part will relate the happenings of the years 1272-1275 the doctrinal conflict at Paris University and Siger's part in the events. | ||
