520 |a The majority of Ugaritic texts have not been adequately published because epigraphically useful photographs have rarely been provided. Scholars relying on previous editions, which usually provide only a transcription and drawn facsimile (neither of which allows for independent evaluation of the traces on the tablet), have been unable to make informed choices about readings on which the editions disagree. That has led to numerous proposals for readings based on philological speculation rather than on epigraphic evidence. This article establishes some guidelines for publishing an alphabetic cuneiform text and presents an edition of the important "Rāpiʾūma" texts, KTU 1.20-22, as a prototype. It includes epigraphically useful photographs, facsimiles that reproduce the writing on the tablet with as much accuracy as possible, a transcription and epigraphic commentary on the text, and a separate section on restoration of lacunae.
