Bishops, priests and the faithful had not anticipated this instruction and surely were caught by surprise. It seems that the document was not preceded by an in-depth consultation process, as was done, for example, in relation to the vademecum published on 16 July 2020 by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith on dealing with cases of child sexual abuse in the church. Because of the lack of consultative discussion, there will be continued criticism against the document issued by the Congregation for the Clergy. Limiting their attention to the second part of the instruction, where the inimitable liturgical importance of the priest and the non-delegable governing role of the clergy is accentuated, some critics regard the document as a barrier for the renewal process. The sharpest opposition to the instruction is voiced in the German-speaking nations. Many German bishops and theologians argue against the rigid canonical content of the instruction, viewing it as a betrayal of its title, which calls for pastoral conversion. | ||
