The 12 Ugaritic and 170 Hebrew usages of the word show that, although h. is used mainly, but not always, with words indicating prostration, it does not indicate the movement but its meaning. H. is closely related to the acclamation yechi hammäläk and the oath formula chay Yahweh. Allowing a histafel for early stages of Hebrew, h. is fully explicable as derived from the common northwest semitic root chyy-chwy, to live. Therefore, the postulated root chwh II should be dropped from the Hebrew lexicon. In addition, some thought is given to the question of origin: because both Hebrew and Ugaritic usage point back to an earlier stage of the language, because there exist s-causative and chwy, to live (as against balatu), and because acclamation is important for kingship in Ebla, Ebla might be the origin of this expression
