Die Zisterzienserabtei Marienfeld, gegründet 1185 von einer Gruppe westfälischer Adliger, zählt zu den bedeutendsten Klöstern der Diözese Münster. Mit tatkräftiger Unterstützung des Münsteraner Bischofs Hermann II. erreichte sie bald ihre Blütezeit.
