Die verschiedenen Ansätze konvergieren in der Frage, warum Menschen altruistisch handeln. Der Beitrag stellt den Versuch dar, die wichtigsten Antworten zu sortieren und die kontroverse Debatte um Erklärung und Bewertung altruistischen Verhaltens so darzustellen, dass die interdisziplinäre Anschlussfähigkeit eines für die Theologie unverzichtbaren Begriffs deutlich wird. 
520 |a The attempt of a modern interpretation of the concept of charity, which is pivotal for Jewish-Christian ethics as well as for the occidental culture, can hardly succeed without the dialogue with those disciplines exploring the secular version of it, namely “altruism”. The different approaches converge in the question: Why do human beings act altruistically? This article tries to gather the most important answers and to portray the controversial debate on the explanation and evaluation of altruistic behavior in order to underline the interdisciplinary connectivity of this essential concept for theology.
