Summary: | In the last years the discussion about the identity of Europe and the function of the churches in the modern developments became more and more intensive. Lies presents several contributions of famous European scolars to this subject: Jean Claude Bologne, Rémy Brague, Peter Brown, several authors in a collection edited by Ulrich Herrmann, and others edited by Otto Kallscheuer and Ulrich Nembach, finally one publication of himself. The results of this critical consideration are: 1. The meaning of Europe is very complex and there is no common idea of what Europe is; 2. The cultural identity of Europe is first of all founded on its 'romanitas', but today thwarted by many oecumenical „multilateral“ movements; 3. The christian character of Europe promotes very much the idea of a secularity of the world; 4. Today we see the end of the „Abendland“ and therefore we are looking upon a double identity-crisis, that of Europe and that of the churches. |
