Um dieses spannungsvolle Verhältnis angemessen darzustellen, bringt der Autor gleichermaßen griechische wie ägyptische Quellen zum Sprechen. Bei diesen Quellen handelt es sich um literarische, epigraphische und papyrologische, aber auch um numismatische und archäologische Zeugnisse. So entsteht ein dichtes, in jeder Hinsicht facettenreiches und farbiges Bild von Politik, Wirtschaft, Verwaltung, Kultur, Ideologie und Religion im hellenistischen Ägypten. Es wird deutlich, daß diese Zeit des großen Reiches am Nil keinesfalls als Phase des Niedergangs abgetan werden kann, sondern in ihrer besonderen kultur- und ereignisgeschichtlichen Bedeutung gewürdigt werden muß.
