520 |a Die Arbeit bemüht sich, die bildlichen Darstellungen Jesu Christi als "Schmerzensmann" inhaltlich zu bestimmen. Dies geschieht durch ein zweistufiges Konzept. In der ersten Stufe wird der Reichtum an Darstellungen - in Gestalt der bisher in der Forschung beachteten und zahlreicher bisher nicht beachteter Darstellungen - wahrgenommen und das von diesen abgedeckte inhaltliche Spektrum einschließlich der vorhandenen Verzahnungen von Gedanken ermittelt. In der zweiten Stufe werden dann die Auswirkungen der zutage getretenen inhaltlichen Akzentuierungen mit Blick auf das Verständnis des Phänomens aufgenommen. Es wird also Gesamtschau angestrebt, die der beeindruckenden inhaltlichen Komplexität der Darstellungen einerseits und ihrer starken inhaltlichen Differenziertheit andererseits Rechnung zu tragen versucht. 
520 |a This treatise is endeavoured to determine content(s) of images called "Man of Sorrows". This is done with a two-stage conception. The first stage takes aim at inquiry of the variety of images - of such images, which are considered by research and numerous, which are unnoticed up to now - and of the spectrum in its contents. This includes interlocking of ideas. The second stage comprehends - with a view of understanding this phenomenon - effects of differences in content. It aspires to give a total view, which tries to make allowance for the impressive contentional range and the strong contentional differentiation of the images.
