Overbekend is de uitspraak van Athanasius in dit verband dat ‘het Woord mens geworden is opdat wij goden zouden worden’.1 De vraag is natuurlijk wat zulk een uitdagende zin eigenlijk betekent. In deze bijdrage verkennen we het thema van de vergoddelijking - niet op basis van een of meerdere auteurs uit de patristische of orthodoxe traditie, maar wel aan de hand van het denken van een laatmiddeleeuwse westerse theoloog, namelijk de Brabantse prior Jan van Ruusbroec (1293-1381), ook al gebruikt hij het woord ‘vergoddelijking’ uiterst zelden. Ruusbroec schrijft op een belangrijk keerpunt in de ontwikkeling van het westerse denken en dit keerpunt heeft alles te maken met deze thematiek, zoals we zullen zien. Hij licht de thematiek van de vergoddelijking toe aan de hand van drie thema’s: de vereniging met middel, de vereniging zonder middel, en de vereniging zonder differentie. Een exploratie van zijn standpunt kan ons, als hedendaagse lezers, wellicht helpen om de thematiek van de vergoddelijking te herontdekken, en de betekenis van de mens hierin. | ||
| 520 | |a The theological theme of ‘deification’ (theosis, deificatio) has long been outside the scope of western theology, even though it played an important role in practical theology. The suspicions against this theme in the western tradition are partly due to the (mis)conception that ‘deification’ would mean man becoming God, taking the place of God, which would entail a rejection of God. Yet, this theme can be found in western Christian thought too, viz. in its mystical literature. In this article, we will explore the theme of ‘deification’ with the help of the ideas of late medieval western theologian Jan van Ruusbroec (1293-1381). He wrote at an important juncture in the development of western thought, when the relational concept of personhood (typical of patristic and medieval thought) increasingly had to give way to the interpretation of man as an individual. This implies that ‘union with God’ - and a fortiori ‘deification’ - can only mean ‘fusion with God’. Ruusbroec, however, tries to radically valorise the relational idea of personhood, all the way down to the level of ‘being’. From this perspective, he can affirm that humanity is called upon to be love, just like the triune God in His union of love. This enables humanity to fully share in the life of God, without, however, losing its createdness. It might help the contemporary reader to appreciate the foundations of Christian humanism. | ||
