As a member of the Vatican Secretariat for Promoting Christian Unity, editor of The Ecumenist, well-travelled guest speaker and prolific writer he has been an energetic advocate of cross-denominational and inter-faith dialogue. My main aim in this tribute to Gregory Baum is to acknowledge our debt to him both for his role as an advocate of dialogue and for his ability to articulate ideas that many Jews, Protestants and Roman Catholics realized that they shared when they saw them in print. My secondary aim is to suggest that his career as an ecumenical theologian has been characterized by traditional, liberal / therapeutic and post-liberal / political phases.
