However, both statements are false, or at least exaggerated, since, on the one hand, pragmatism is a fairly heterogeneous tradition and, on the other hand, the notion of truth within pragmatism implies a complex concept that varies according to each author. This article aims to develop a detailed analysis and confrontation of the conceptions of truth held by Charles S. Peirce and by William James, two of the most important representatives of classical pragmatism. All this in order to partially show that, on the one hand, it is exaggerated to identify the pragmatist conception of truth with what is useful or convenient and, on the other hand, pragmatism should not be conceived as a school or doctrine but as a movement that presents multiple variations. | ||
| 520 | |a Usualmente se piensa que el pragmatismo constituye una escuela filosófica cuyos representantes sostienen una serie de postulados, entre los cuales se encuentra la tesis de que la verdad se identifica con lo útil sin más. Sin embargo, entiendo que ambas afirmaciones son falsas, o por lo menos exageradas, ya que, por un lado, el pragmatismo es una tradición bastante heteróclita y, por otro lado, la noción de verdad dentro del pragmatismo implica un concepto complejo que varía de acuerdo con cada autor. El objeto del presente trabajo será realizar un análisis y confrontación de las concepciones de la verdad sostenidas por Charles S. Peirce y por William James, dos de los más importantes representantes del pragmatismo clásico. Todo esto con el fin de mostrar parcialmente que, por un lado, resulta exagerado identificar la concepción pragmatista de la verdad con lo útil o conveniente y que, por otro lado, el pragmatismo no debe concebirse como una escuela o doctrina sino como un movimiento que presenta múltiples variaciones. | ||
