We should distinguish between being as the existing thing (ens) and being in the sense of to be (esse). Our first concept is that of ens, being, but in our judgments we attain the being (esse) of things, however in a universal concept, but because of the collaboration of the senses, our intellect shares in the immediate intuition of existing things by the senses. Owing to the discovery of the real distinction in created things between their essence and their act of being Aquinas developed his doctine of the esse of things. The so called real distinction between the essence and existence of things is demonstrated by their contingent existence. Essence and existence constitute the existing real thing, and never occur separated from each other. God creates them together. In the perspective of creation being (esse) is the reality of all beings and the perfection of all perfections. Mientras que el primer concepto es el de ente, el ser real se capta en el primer juicio, en un concepto que es universal pero, gracias a su colaboración con los sentidos, el intelecto participa de la intuición inmediata de las cosas existentes por los sentidos. Gracias al descubrimiento de la distinción real en todas las cosas entre el acto de ser y su esencia, que se demuestra por la contingencia de las criaturas —es decir del hecho de que no tienen la existencia por sí mismas—, se demuestra que las criaturas son compuestas de una esencia y de acto de ser, el cual confiere realidad a su esencia. El acto del ser las hace real. El ser y la esencia constituyen la cosa existente, no existen jamás separados. Santo Tomás afirma que Dios los crea juntos. En la perspectiva de la creación, el ser es la realidad de todos los entes y la perfecciónde todas las perfecciones. El ser no tiene extensión, es indiviso.
