La formación que recibió André Frossard fue no sólo ajena a Dios sino sistemáticamente atea. Así, cuando André llegó a los veinte años, la fe le resultaba algo completamente extraño. En esa situación, sucedió algo que todavía no se explica: por equivocación —estaba buscando a un amigo y entró en una iglesia pensando que era la Escuela Normal Superior— contempló la Sagrada Forma expuesta. Así lo describe: no tenía en aquellos momentos penal de amor, ni inquietud de ninguna clase, ni curiosidad por nada. La religión era para mí una vieja quimera, y los cristianos unas gentes que se habían quedado retrasadas en el camino de la evolución (...) En mi ambiente, se consideraba la religión tan desfasada que ni siquiera se esgrimía una actitud anticlerical, salvo quizás en tiempo de elecciones. Y continúa, esta vez hablando en tercera persona; no he olvidado el estupor que sintió cuando de repente, desde el fondo de aquella capilla, surgió ante él todo un mundo, un mundo distinto, de una resplandor deslumbrante; de una enorme densidad, y cuya luz revelaba y encubría al mismo tiempo la presencia de Dios... | ||
