This work has been the focus of much study and commentary by Twelver Šīʿī scholars over the centuries, and with al-Muḥaqqiq’s other legal breviary, Šarāʾiʿ al-Islām, holds a leading position in the number of commentaries within the tradition. Commentaries were written on this text into the 14th/20th century, and it remained a standard seminary (madrasa) curriculum text over a 700-year period. In this article I examine first the muḫtaṣar in the Twelver Šīʿī legal tradition, then al-Muḫtaṣar al-Nāfiʿ and its contents, and finally I give an assessment of its impact and reception history. If the aim of a muḫtaṣar is to establish doctrine, and be a focus for study and commentary, then al-Muḫtaṣar al-Nāfiʿ can be judged to have been a great success. | ||

Cet ouvrage a fait l’objet de nombreuses études et commentaires de la part des érudits chiites duodécimains au cours des siècles et, avec l’autre bréviaire juridique d’al-Muḥaqqiq, Šarāʾiʿ al-Islām, il occupe une place prépondérante parmi les nombreux commentaires au sein de la tradition. Des commentaires ont été écrits sur ce texte jusqu’au XIVe/XXe siècle, et il est resté un texte standard du programme des séminaires (madrasa) pendant plus de 700 ans. Dans cet article, je retrace d’abord l’histoire du muḫtaṣar dans la tradition juridique chiite duodécimaine, puis du Muḫtaṣar al-Nāfiʿ et de son contenu et, enfin, je procède à une évaluation de son impact et de l’histoire de sa réception. Si l’objectif d’un muḫtaṣar est d’établir une doctrine et d’être un centre d’étude et de commentaire, alors al-Muḫtaṣar al-Nāfiʿ peut être considéré comme un grand succès. | ||
