Para fundamentar este aspecto, el presente artículo analiza la obra magna de Jerónimo Xavier, Āʾīna-yi ḥaqq-namā (Espejo de la verdad, 1609), y la clara resistencia que produjo al compromiso teológico interreligioso del misionero católico en el mundo musulmán cuando llegó a la Persia safávida. Tras observar las repercusiones polémicas interreligiosas que tuvo este texto entre los eruditos chiítas de la Persia safávida y los eruditos católicos de Europa durante el siglo XVII, este artículo de manera crítica reconsidera el paradigma clásico de la "traducción intercultural" en estudios de las misiones manteniendo que la "resistencia a la traducción" por parte de otras creencias es igualmente importante para comprender el proceso misionero de transmisión de la fe cristiana entre culturas y religiones. | ||
| 520 | |a The notion and strategy of "cross-cultural translation" has enjoyed a certain pride of place in Jesuit missions. Less attention has been given to processes of resistance occurring in relation to such translational missionary pursuits. To make the case for this point, this paper studies Jerónimo Xavier’s opus magnum Āyina-yi ḥaqq-namā (Truth-Revealing Mirror, 1609) and the distinct resistance it sparked in the Muslim world, especially in Safavid Persia, among those who challenged the Catholic mission’s effort at interreligious theological engagement. Taking note of the interreligious polemical repercussions of this text between Shia scholars of Safavid Persia and Catholic scholars in Europe over the 17th century, this paper critically revisits the classical paradigm of cross-cultural translation in Mission Studies and argues that acts of "resisting translation" by the religious other is equally important for understanding the missional process of adapting Christian faith across cultures and religions. | ||
