Three recent responses to the question have adopted different approaches, respectively of biblical theology, the Psalter’s canonical shape and speech-act theory. This paper reviews and critiques these responses along with another key contribution to the topic which draws on trauma theory. Each contribution is found to leave some aspect of the fundamental problem unresolved, leading to the conclusion that perhaps such Psalms require a ‘user guide’ in order to be safely adopted as Christian prayer, as well as revealing scope for further research into the network of relationships implicated in prayer. | ||
