Description
Summary:The article analyses two new ways of representing the papacy in the second half of the 19th century. It starts from the hypothesis that the representation of the Pope evolved from an ancient sovereign of the Old Regime to a soft power. His power would evolve into moral power as the leader of a world religion. To analyse these new forms of representation of the papacy, we will apply the methodology of the new historiography on monarchy and focus essentially on two aspects: the representation of the pontiff’s private life and jubilees and audiences, as ways of representing a closer and more human power.
