| Summary: | Religion, with all its imagery, stories and figures, is a frequent and multidimensional presence in popular culture, or mass culture. This is evident in the reinterpretations of its stories and characters that can be seen in advertising, television series and graphic designs. One of the most widespread forms of popular expression in recent years is the graphic novel, which has earned the title of "ninth art". These graphic novels are filled with stories of biblical heroes who are easily recognisable in popular culture. Tom Gauld, a British illustrator well known for his comic strips in The Guardian, entered this new genre with a graphic reinterpretation of the story of the battle between David and Goliath. Drawing on E. Panofsky's methodology, this article reflects on the dialogue between philosophy, theology and art, examining Gauld's treatment of the story from iconographic and exegetical points of view. It attempts to reveal how the dialogue between art and faith enriches our understanding of the biblical story. La presencia de la religión, de sus imágenes, relatos y figuras, en la cultura popular, entendida ésta como cultura de masas, es frecuente y multidimensional. Esta presencia se hace visible en las reinterpretaciones que de sus historias y personajes que encontramos en la publicidad, las series, y los diseños gráficos. La novela gráfica, una de las formas de expresión popular más difundida en los últimos años, y que ha merecido el calificativo de "noveno arte", se puebla de historias de héroes bíblicos fácilmente reconocibles en la cultura popular. El ilustrador británico Tom Gauld, muy conocido por sus tiras gráficas en The Guardian, se introdujo en el campo de este género tan nuevo con una relectura gráfica de la historia del combate entre David y Goliat. El artículo, teniendo de fondo la reflexión acerca del diálogo entre filosofía, teología y arte, se ayuda de la metodología de E. Panofsky, y examina el tratamiento que Gauld da a la historia, tanto desde el punto de vista iconográfico como exegético, intentando desvelar los puntos en los que el diálogo entre arte y fe enriquece la lectura de la historia bíblica. |
